SPHEREx: The Telescope That Will Map Everything

What is SPHEREx?

• The acronym SPHEREx refers for Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization, and Ice Explorer. It's a small space telescope that will look at the entire sky in near-infrared light.
• Unlike telescopes, which focus on a specific portion of the sky, SPHERE will look at everything, providing scientists with a comprehensive image of the universe. Its primary function is to investigate light from stars, galaxies, and other objects.
• SPHERE will unveil the universe's secrets by examining this light, from its origins to the molecules that potentially support life in our galaxy.
What Will SPHEREx Do?
• SPHEREx has three major goals:
1. Study the Early Universe
• SPHERE will peer back billions of years, when the first stars and galaxies formed. The Epoch of Reionization marked the first time the universe was filled with light.
• It will also investigate the inflationary era that occurred immediately following the Big Bang. During this epoch, the cosmos expanded faster than light. SPHERE will help scientists understand how this influenced the universe we see today.
2. Find Molecules That Support Life.
• SPHEREx will search our galaxy for water ice and organic compounds, both of which are necessary for life. These molecules are present in the chilly regions where stars and planets born.
3. Make a 3D map of the universe.
• SPHEREx will map hundreds of millions of galaxies in three dimensions. This map will demonstrate how galaxies are distributed in space and how they have changed throughout time. It will help scientists study the universe's large-scale structure.
How Will SPHEREx Work?
• SPHEREx is loaded with equipment meant to investigate the universe in depth:
Spectrophotometer: This instrument measures light from various objects to determine their composition and qualities.
Wide Sky Coverage: Throughout its two-year mission, SPHEREx will scan the whole sky four times to collect as much data as possible.
Compact design: SPHEREx is a tiny, efficient telescope that produces impressive results at a low cost.
• SPHEREx's data will help other telescopes, such as the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), focus on specific locations for future research.
Timeline of Mission
• SPHEREx is scheduled to launch in April 2025 atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
