NASA's Psyche Mission: Exploring a Metal-Rich Asteroid

16 Psyche :

• Psyche is a planned orbiter mission that will research the metallic asteroid of the same name to investigate the origin of planetary cores. Arizona State University's Lindy Elkins-Tanton is the main investigator who proposed this project for NASA's Discovery Program. The project will be managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

• The Psyche mission is a NASA Discovery Program mission that will launch to the asteroid 16 Psyche in October 2023. The metal-rich asteroid 16 Psyche is supposed to be the exposed core of an early planetesimal.

• The mission will use a number of equipment to investigate the composition, structure, and magnetic field of 16 Psyche.

Why is Psyche so unique?

• 16 Psyche is unique in that it is the only known asteroid that is mostly composed of metal. Most asteroids are comprised of rock and ice, however 16 Psyche is suspected to be made of nickel-iron, the same substance that makes up planet cores. This makes 16 Psyche a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to investigate the makeup of planet cores.

What will the Psyche mission

accomplish?

• The Psyche mission will utilize a number of equipment to investigate the composition, structure, and magnetic field of 16 Psyche. Among the spacecraft's instruments are:

• A high-resolution camera to scan the surface of 16 Psyche

• A magnetometer to measure the magnetic field of the asteroid

• A gamma-ray spectrometer will be used to determine the composition of the asteroid.

 • A neutron spectrometer to determine the elemental composition of the asteroid

The spacecraft's radio communications equipment will also be used to analyze the gravity field of 16 Psyche.

What do scientists hope to discover as a result of the Psyche mission?

• The Psyche mission is expected to teach scientists a lot. They want to discover more about 16 Psyche's composition, internal structure, magnetic field, and formation. They also want to learn more about planet creation and evolution.

• The Psyche project is a tremendously ambitious undertaking, yet it has the potential to solve some of our solar system's most fundamental mysteries. I'm looking forward to seeing what the mission discovers.
